Places that tourists are not allowed to visit
The list of the most popular tourist attractions that are forbidden or restricted to visit was published in April.
Such places include:
- The Lascaux cave in France. In the 1940s, the ancient people’s rock painting was discovered there. In order to preserve the cave in its original form, a replica of this cave was constructed for tourists in close proximity to the real one.
- Stonehenge in Great Britain. This monolithic construction attracted tourists so much that they kept trying to break off a piece of the stone as a souvenir. Now it is possible to look at this monument only from a distance.
- The Maya Bay beach on Thailand’s Phi Phi island. It is known to tourists due to The Beach movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. After the movie was released, the flow of tourists to the island increased greatly, which resulted in ecological problems. The country’s authorities are going to close the island for several months in June to restore the marine flora and coral reefs.
